Terraria 1.3 on Mac OSX

I trying to get Terraria 1.3 on my Mac today and ran into trouble. A few hours of it! haha So here is the easiest solution for now to get you going without hours of wasted time.

Here’s what I tried:

Play OnMac – This program works awesome and I use it to get most Windows program to work on my Mac. It’s even free! But it didn’t work for Terraria 1.3. I tried and tried and tried many different ways, but no luck. (PlayOnMac link: https://www.playonmac.com/en/)

Then I searched around and found a post on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraria/comments/3boqqs/mac_wrapper_for_terraria_13/) but it doesn’t work for the Steam version of Terraria, which I own.

So then I looked for more Windows on Mac type of programs and found Crossover. I installed the free 14 day trial which should work for long enough, because the makers of Terraria say that sometime in July 2015 they will release a stable Mac and Linux version of Terraria 1.3. Here’s a link to Crossover (https://www.codeweavers.com/products/), you have to enter a name and email address but then it downloads and works fine.

LittleBigPlanet 3 Review and Gameplay

I just finished the entire story of LittleBigPlanet 3. It is an amazing game. The controls feel a lot smoother now than LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2. The new characters Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop are really fun to play and easy to control. The story mode was great. It was very unique and some of the later levels are really difficult but super fun to play. The graphics were amazing, the sound and music was perfect. All around LittleBigPlanet 3 is a great game.

I played through the entire game with my son and we had a blast. Here is the first few videos of an entire set of gameplay. Each video is 10 minutes or less and goes from the introduction story all the way to the ending! I hope you guys like it.

Windows 10 on iMac 5k Benchmarks

I have been using Windows 10 now for a few days on the new Retina iMac with the 5k resolution. Everything is running smoothly. I played a few games, recorded some videos, used movie maker to edit them and everything works great. Now I decided to run the same benchmarks I ran on the OS X side. It actually scores better on the windows 10 side. Watch: http://youtu.be/e3HVVx9z5sw Remember this is an iMac 5k with the i7 processor and the m295x video card. I also upgraded it to 16GB ram. Here are the numbers: GeekBench Couldn’t run kept crashing NovaBench Score 1913 CPU 904 GPU 730 FPS 1944 Cinebench GPU 120 CPU 805 Unigine Heaven FPS 31.5 Score 795 All benchmarks were higher except for the CPU score on NovaBench. Another thing to consider out the iMac 5k is that it scored in the top 10 CPUs and GPUs of NovaBench and higher than the new MacPro. Crazy.

Ultra Street Fighter IV on iMac 5k (Windows 10)

I downloaded steam and installed Ultra Street Fighter IV to play on the new iMac. I love the Street Fighter series and I couldn’t wait to play it on the new Retina iMac. I ran the benchmark on it, and it graded the computer as an A. Then I played a round online. The final verdict: Ultra Street Figher IV plays perfect on an iMac 5k with Windows 10 loaded. Check out the video.

How To Steps Windows 10 on iMac 5k using Boot Camp Assistant

Anyone can do this and it is fun to have Windows running on your iMac, strange too! You don’t have to install windows 10, it can be 7 or 8 as well.

This was easier than expected. I tried this before on my 2010 iMac and ran into some trouble. This time it only took about 30-45 minutes (not including download times) and everything worked perfectly. This may not always be the case for you and this process partitions your hard drive and installs windows on it, so be careful. Backup anything important in case something goes wrong and you lose everything.

Also, you need an external 8GB+ USB hard drive or flash drive.

Ok here goes…

How to install Windows 10 onto the new iMac 5k:

First download Windows 10 Tech Preview here
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=510225

(full page with more options is here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso)

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.11.21 PM

This is the 64bit version that you will need for your 64bit iMac.

After you download the 3Gig file, open up disk utility on your iMac
It can be found in the Applications folder, inside Utilities.

Now find the ISO you downloaded, it should be in your downloads folder. Double click it.

The image mounts and a window pops up showing the contents of the DVD image.

Go back to the Disk Utility, you should see the ISO and under it DVD image loaded.

windows 10 iso disk utility mac osx

Highlight the ISO file and right click it. Then choose convert.

(In this step I am converting it to a CD/DVD master. For some reason i needed to do this or Bootcamp wouldn’t make my install disk.)

Now where you want to save the file, and pick image format: DVD/CD master. Then click save.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.03.05 PM

This will save a CDR file in the location you chose. (Choosing Desktop makes it easy to find again.)

Ok time to start using BootCamp. Click the little search magnifying glass at the top right.

Start typing Bootcamp and it will appear, double click it to start.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.12.50 PM

Click continue.

Make sure all 3 check boxes are ticked.

Create Windows 7 or later version install disk, Download the latest Windows support software from Apple, Install Windows.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.22.05 PM copy

Click continue. At this point you need an 8GB or higher USB, Flash ,Thumb, drive thingamagig. I used a 1TB backup disk.

Insert the drive, wait for it to load and choose the CDR file that you made as the source

Choose the USB drive you inserted as the destination

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.27.41 PM

Click continue and wait a while, go get a snack or a drink.

It will  install windows 10, then it downloads and installs drivers (windows support software).

FYI those drivers will be installed on the USB drive in a folder called Bootcamp, you will need to install them later.

Finally you get to choose how much space you want for Windows.

I chose 125 GB, but you can choose more. Just slide the little slider to the size you would like.

Click continue and wait for disk partition.

Wait longer and longer…..a looooooonnnngggg time later the computer restarts!

Windows starts to load woohoo!

Choose custom install (if this is the first time)

Choose the bootcamp partition, which is where you want windows installed.

Choose FORMAT!!! Yep you have to format it to the NTSF file system or Windows won’t install, but it won’t hurt anything. Bootcamp just erased it right before this. I don’t know why bootcamp doesn’t just format it with the NTFS file system since it helps you with everything else.

Don’t pick your main iMac hard drive installation accidentally. Formatting deletes everything and you can’t easily get it back.

Now wait again…

Wait for, copying windows files, installing stuff, etc…

After a while the computer mystically restarts itself again!

Then wait while it gets your devices ready, whatever that means.

Oh look…it restarts again… all by itself.

Finally this time you will see Windows 10 loading up

Create a user name and password, it actually wants you to use a Microsoft Live account, which you may have one if you own an Xbox.

Now Windows will load up completely and you are at the desktop! Congrats, you are almost done.

Let’s install the iMac drivers for all of the devices in your amazing 27inch Retina iMac 5k!

Go to my computer, click on your USB drive. Find the bootcamp directory and run Setup.exe

That will install all of the needed drivers for your computer.

The computer will blank out a few times and then asks you to restart it. Do that.

Once the computer restarts it will load windows and be fully operational!!!

Now use windows to your hearts content! And take a few pics with your phone showing Windows loaded on a computer with the Apple logo. People will start calling you a hacker in no time!

OK something else important. When you restart the computer it always loads up windows!!! How to get back to your MAC stuff…

Reset the computer

As soon as it makes the crazy loud loading sound while the screen is black still

Hold down the ALT/OPTION key on the key board

A menu will pop up eventually that allows you to pick your boot device

Choose the first Macintosh HD

Now the Mac OS X side of you hard drive will boot up.

Now inside of Mac OS X you can change which side loads up.

Go to settings, click Start Up Disk

In that menu you can choose which operating system that you want to always load up.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 5.38.50 PM

Either choose Bootcamp Windows for Windows to always load, or Macintosh HD to load the Mac OSX.

At anytime you can hold ALT OPTIONS during restart to override and choose a different one.

OK guys, I hope that helps a lot. I will try to get some type of video up about this and more screenshots on the Windows 10 side later.

Bootcamp on Retina iMac 5k (Late 2014)

I decided to install Bootcamp on the new iMac 5k. I will write a quick walkthrough of it soon. I actually installed Windows 10 developer preview on it.

Is the Retina iMac 5k Refresh Rate 30hz? or 60hz?

I see this all over the internet. People asking about the refresh rate on Apple’s new iMac 5k. Well if it was 30hz everyone would be disappointed. I tested it several ways. I always had to use software methods though. I am pretty sure I know the refresh rate.

First Refresh Rate Test on the iMac

2nd iMac 5k Refresh Rate test

I also ran several games at the 5K resolutions with V Sync enabled. This gave me a reading of 60hz. My conclusion is that the Retina iMac runs at 60hz. Some people disagree with me though. I don’t have anyway to test it with hardware. Everything I have done on the new iMac leads me to a 60hz monitor. If it was 30z it would be very noticeable.

I have also loaded bootcamp on it now and in Windows 10 it shows 60hz.

Retina iMac 5k Gameplay and Gaming

I started testing several games on the new Retina iMac right away. I will be using it for work, but maybe I want to use it for gaming too! And I want to see if the games can hang at 5k. So I should test it! I love testing computers anyway. I made one video using my iPhone, but I an actually screen captured some games at 5K and it doesn’t hurt the FPS too much.

World of Warcraft, DOTA 2 (Defenders of the Ancients), Minecraft using iPhone

Minecraft in 5K

Starcraft II in 5k iMac

Retina iMac 5k and Diablo 3

World of Warcraft fly through Jade Forest in several resolutions on 2014 Retina iMac

Eve Online Gaming in 5k and more on the new iMac

In the end the iMac 5k is a very formidable gaming machine that can edit and encode videos like lightning. This one does have the i7 processor and the Radeon m295x video card. It also has 16GB Ram. Those probably help.

iMac 5k Benchmarks – 27 inch Late 2014 i7 and m295x

I ran a few benchmarks on the new iMac 5k. It performed really well on everything, despite it having a small video card and very little cooling compared to the computer I built last week. Also, 5k resolution looks amazing. One interesting thing to note is that the GPU gets up over 200 degrees F, when pushed hard. Seems scary but it hasn’t broke yet! haha Benchmark video and scores below.

GeekBench
multicore 16461
single 4366

NovaBench
